The Past, Present and Future of Bamboo Theatre

What exactly are "bamboo theatre," and "plays for the gods"? With over a century of history in Hong Kong, bamboo theatre is a cherished memory for the older generation. How did this fascinating cultural tradition come to be? As a hub for local clans and diverse cultural groups, what social significance does it carry? Cantonese opera has gracefully transitioned from local bamboo theatre to amusement parks and cinemas. How does the experience differ between outdoor and an indoor theatre?

Join Professor Yuen Siu-fai as he unravels the origins and evolution of shelter theatre, sharing captivating stories and insights. Explore its past, present, and future, and dive into the challenges of nurturing and preserving Cantonese opera in Hong Kong.

Dive into the interactive exhibition that brings to life the rich history and unique features of the opera tent, enlivened by tales and highlights from select performances. Discover the fascinating origins of these tents and the captivating customs of ritual opera. Engage your senses with audio-visual QR codes and challenge your cultural savvy with our fun-filled quiz. 

But the adventure doesn't stop there! Unleash your creativity in "Write Your Own Bamboo Blessings," where you can capture your dreams and wishes on bamboo, carrying these blessings with you. And for our young explorers, "Bamboo Fun for Kids" offers a delightful DIY mini flower plaque activity, inviting them to take home a piece of this intricate art form. Join us for a journey that promises to enlighten, engage, and enchant!
